how it works about safety cities

safety centre

meeting someone new should be boring.

we are building this in south africa, for people in south africa. that means safety is not a policy page. it is the thing the product is shaped around.
here is exactly what happens, in order, when you join something.
before you can join anything
every profile is verified
a working email and a real phone number, both confirmed. one account per number, so a blocked person cannot walk straight back in.
18 and over
an age check at sign-up. Let’s is not built for under-18s and we do not want them on it.
optional face login
turn it on and your account is tied to your face, not just your phone. people who join public activities see that you have.
you choose the circle
friends only, friends of friends, or open within a radius you set. most people start at friends of friends and stay there.
on the day
what happens from joining to going home.
01
the group is small on purpose
two to eight people. big enough that nobody is alone with a stranger, small enough that everybody is accountable.
02
no numbers change hands
the group chat is the only channel. nobody gets your phone number, your surname or your address, and there is nothing to hand over by accident.
03
public places by default
activities open to strangers have to be at a public venue. a private address can only be used for friends, and it is never shown on the feed.
04
a private meet-up code
everyone gets a short code for that plan. you confirm on arrival, so attendance is real and a no-show is on the record instead of a story.
05
the chat closes
an hour after the plan ends. nobody keeps a line to you afterwards unless you both choose to add each other.
06
private ratings afterwards
a thumb up or down on each person. never shown to them, never shown as a number on a profile. it feeds a reputation score, and a bad one quietly stops you being joinable.
if something goes wrong
one tap, from anywhere in the app.
the safety centre sits in the chat header and on every profile, not buried three menus deep.
report or block, mid-chat
a block removes them from the plan immediately and they are never shown your activities again.
share your plan with someone
send a friend the what, where and when in one tap, without them needing the app.
SAPS 10111 and the GBV command centre
emergency numbers are in the app, dialable without leaving the screen you are on.
a real person reads reports
reported chats are retained for investigation even though they have closed for everyone else. that is the one exception to the chat disappearing.
your data
what we keep, and what we throw away.
your exact location
never shown to anyone. the feed works on approximate distance, and activities show a venue, not you.
your surname and number
held for verification, never displayed and never given to another user.
chat contents
deleted when the chat closes, unless it has been reported.
who you met
kept, so we can stop repeat problems and so friends-of-friends means something real.
your data, sold
no. not to advertisers, not to venues, not to your estate or your employer.
found a hole in any of this?
we would rather hear it now, before launch, than after. tell us and we will fix it in the first version.
